Session 17 — First Day in Silverthread
Date played: March 21, 2026 Location: Silverthread — The Aureate, The Tangle, The Umbral (attempted)
Session 17 was the party’s first full day in the city.
They started in the Aureate. At the Silverflow Fountain, Cyrene nearly jumped in — Luna and Dash talked her out of it — and Dash left an offering of Fallowroot at the carved figures around the basin. They visited Tallowmere Provisions and the Woven Cup, where they had tea and were told it was too early to cross into the Umbral. The Umbral attempt confirmed it — guards turned them away, district not yet active. Lucian and Dash were already eyeing Willow’s new map of the city and thinking about the Unseelie Archive.
At the Silverspan, Clever suggested they stop and listen to an argument. Brenn Asholt, the city’s official cartographer, was at his drafting table with Lady Caelindra Voss standing over him. She wanted a direct bridge between the Aureate and Umbral added to his official survey. He refused — not because he doubted it existed, but because the official record contained no bridge and his survey had to reflect the official record. Lucian asked him whether others remembered it. Brenn said most people he’d spoken to had no memory of it at all. Those were two different problems. Only one of them was his to solve.
Luna went into the Grand Pavilion and found Ball preparations well underway — a sign inside stated the Masquerade Ball was in ten days.
At the Court of Petals gardens, the party found mismatched stonework at the back of the platform — architecture that didn’t fit its surroundings, a gap that felt more like an absence than a design choice. Dash sketched the area. Clever made a series of jumps across the gap to the Umbral platform and back, finding a route through open air. She didn’t know what she’d done. The guards didn’t see her.
The Twilight Rest was too expensive. Cyrene left with a crystal ashtray bearing the hotel’s initials. Lucian attempted to lift something from a wealthy-looking guest on the way out, was caught, and talked his way clear while Cyrene made a distraction. The proprietor, Esovin, always knows where everyone in the room is. Esovin noticed.
Then Liraelle. She showed the party two programs from a coronation two hundred years ago — both authentic, both in her own hand, bearing different names. While she was holding one of them, the name on it changed. Seal intact. No one touching it. The party watched it happen.
They checked into the Silver Bough — two rooms, ten gold — and that was where the day ended.
What you know now that you didn’t before:
A bridge once connected the Aureate and Umbral directly. Most people have no memory of it. Brenn does. Caelindra has a map. The place where it connected still shows something in the stonework.
Documents can change without being touched. You watched it happen.
