Session 05 — Conyberry and the Road South
Date played: TBD Location: Conyberry — The Road South
Sister Garaele asked the party to seek out a banshee named Agatha, north of Conyberry, to learn the location of a spellbook once owned by the legendary mage Bowgentle. She’d tried to get the answer herself and barely escaped with her life. She gave the party a silver comb to offer Agatha as an apology.
The road there wasn’t quiet. A day in, the party was attacked by spiderlike creatures while camped.
Conyberry itself turned out to be ruins — ten houses’ worth of a village, abandoned for years. Picking through the wreckage, they found claw marks gouged into the floorboards of an old trading post, and a curved fang nearby that nobody could explain. In the wreck of an old smithy, the remains of a forge. In the largest standing building, the remains of a brewery — a kettle, a mortar and pestle still salvageable after all this time. Somewhere in the ruins they met a changeling named Scavenger, who fell in with the group.
On the road south, three cockatrices ambushed them. Matuk was petrified mid-fight. Two strangers stepped out of the trees to help finish the battle and carry him back to camp — a wood elf druid named Rithlin, and a wood elf ranger named Shydwyn, traveling with a panther.
That night, around the fire, Rithlin told stories — about pixies, about the slow art of changing the color of leaves, about getting tricked into a very embarrassing dinner once. Shydwyn said little until Agatha came up, and then told them about wights and a necromancer who burned her village when she was a child.
The fire didn’t stay peaceful. Before morning, the camp was attacked — an archer in the trees, a spellcaster casting from cover, and demons summoned from nowhere. The party fought them off. The spellcaster escaped into the shadows.
In the morning, before parting ways, Rithlin gave the party several gifts: waterskins, a Ring of Jumping, a necklace strung with magical prayer beads, and a heavy sealed box wrapped in cloth, which he asked them to deliver to Agatha for safekeeping. He told them he’d found several boxes like it lately, and that he intended to visit Agatha himself soon to ask her about them. He asked them to send his regards to Sister Garaele, and to ask her to show them her tattoo. He also invited Luna to visit him sometime in Femaer Mi, if she wanted to learn more about pixies.
Then he and Shydwyn left, and the party turned toward Agatha’s lair.
