At a Glance

The city’s official cartographer. He knows the bridge existed. He can’t put it on the map.

Appearance

Grey-pale skin, dark hair falling across one eye, eyes fully black. Multiple piercings along both ears and one through his lower lip. Dark clothes, precisely cut, no faction insignia. When he’s thinking — which is often — he carves small wooden animals with a knife he keeps in his coat pocket. He doesn’t always finish them.

Personality

Brenn is not looking for trouble. The argument he’s currently in found him, because Lady Caelindra tracked down the one person in the city whose job requires him to produce the official bridge survey. He knows what he knows. He also knows what he can and can’t put in an official document. Those two things are in direct conflict and it is making him miserable.

He will talk to people who seem serious and who aren’t treating him like an obstacle. He does not raise his voice. If he’s angry, he gets quieter.

What He’ll Tell You

He used a direct bridge between the Seelie and Unseelie quarters every day for a hundred and fifty years. One day it wasn’t there. No rubble. No announcement. No record of demolition. He doesn’t know what to think of that.

Most people he’s mentioned it to don’t remember the bridge at all — including people who should be old enough to.

He cannot put the bridge on the official survey because the official record contains no bridge. These are two different problems, and only one of them is his to solve.

“I know it existed. I walked it every day for a hundred and fifty years.”

“I can’t put it on this map.”

“I record what the official record shows. The official record has no bridge. Those are two different problems and only one of them is mine to solve.”
